Have you ever wondered how watercolorists get that beautiful glow in their paintings, or those interesting transparent color mixtures? At the June general meeting, Denise Oyama Miller will demonstrate and discuss how she uses the inherent flowing qualities of water and pigment to achieve these special effects. She will be demonstrating a technique for pouring paint onto the watercolor paper that is fascinating and fun to do. She’s been experimenting with this technique for over 15 years and will share her techniques and tips. Denise comments, "I love experimenting with different techniques in various mediums. When I discovered the pouring process, I was so excited with my first attempt that I have been trying lots of different ways of pouring ever since. My paintings improved, because this technique requires you to think about the elements of design during the planning process."

Denise has worked in textiles for over 30 years and started painting in watercolors about 16 years ago. Once she retired in 2000, she has devoted herself full time on her art. Her work has won many awards and has been included in many private and public collections. Her work can be seen at Alexander's Fine Art in Pleasanton, California; Ohlone Arts in Fremont, California, and Gallery Concord in Concord, California, where she is a co-director of the gallery. She is a member of Artists 7, a women's art group that travels together and shows their work throughout Northern California. She is also a member of the California Watercolor Association, Fremont Art Association, Livermore Art Association, Amador Valley Quilters, and Studio Art Quilt Associates.

Denise is currently doing a 2-woman show during the month of May at Hakone Japanese Gardens in Saratoga called Geisha and Gardens. She will be participating in the Fremont Art Association Open Studios, May 31 - June 1, 2008.
