Untitled Blue, Acrylic on Canvas, 18x24 |
After many years of teaching art in the public schools,
and painting watercolor landscapes, I felt the desire to explore
non-representational work. Abstract painting
greatly enhances the freedom to explore color, form and texture –
as a direct medium of expression, unhampered by the
demands of representational forms. There are no
recognizable images. In that sense the piece is more
about paint than a subject. The viewer is free to bring
anything he wants to the painting.
I seek a balance of light and dark, negative and positive,
strong gesture and delicate line. Often I will layer
colors and textures, scratching through to see
what lies beneath. Spattering, stroking, lifting ,rubbing
, dripping –sometimes incorporating various papers, I
believe that it is finished when it works as a
painting.
